Substance use prevention strategies take an upstream approach, which aims to stop substance use before it starts. Prevention coalitions build community strategies that enhance decision-making skills and strengthen emotional well-being and resiliency. They also prioritize informing youth and families about the risk factors that contribute to early substance use and the protective factors that mitigate it.
